Distraction Or Relaxation?

If you want to resolve a stressful situation, which way do you go: distraction or relaxation?

With
smartphones, tablets, laptop, social media, television, radio, advertising everywhere,
and additionally
real people like colleagues, family and friends (in a likely order of consuming your time)
ALL around us
All the time demanding our attention
it is not surprising
that attention spans
get shorter
& shorter ...
and the ability to focus
is weakening continuously.

Do burn-outs contribute to heating up the world we live in?

Some more escapes?
Being restless is a socially accepted activity. Or, if you find an opponent, trying to be a 'warrior' may fill some time. Also pretending we are multitasking is quite popular (http://tinyurl.com/pernkts).

Do burn-outs contribute to heating up the world we live in? The connection between in-vironmental crisis (addiction of all sorts, burn-outs, depression, etc) and its companion, the en-vironmental crisis (both in a socially and nature oriented sense) appears to be obvious. Yet exactly that relation escapes us constantly. How can people who are all the time teetering at the edge of what is healthy make any responsible decisions?

Imagine a marionette theater capturing our attention by playing out a dramatic, emotional story. Although we know that they move because of the strings attached to their limbs operated by a real but unseen person we let us fully be involved in the story.

Could this serve us as a metaphor for different aspects of our life?

Our Inventions Are Wont To Be Pretty Toys, Which Distract Our Attention From Serious Things.

Henry David Thoreau

Let's propose three options:

  • marionettes are operated and used in a coordinated way by another person in order to express some meaningful action.
  • marionettes are operated and abused by others pulling the strings in all kinds of directions creating confusion.
  • marionettes have some kind of intrinsic evolving intelligence which operates by intuition and effective execution using gravity.

Can we learn something from the three types of puppets?  Obviously the one who is pulled in different directions is the distracted version that we incorporate in today's app world all too often. The one with an orderly controlled movement appears to be alright - except it is controlled by somebody else. That leaves us with the option trusting our intrinsic intelligence of body, mind, soul and beyond. The 'beyond' represents all the information we can't control but may ask for.

Meditation seems to be a good proposition to counter the attention deficit. Sitting still in silence keeping an an upright position may be hard at first, with all the chatter in our head suddenly taking the stage unless we realize that keeping the upright position is  actually much more important than the noise. This noise is our daily reality that we habitually and unconsciously follow.

You want to be a 'warrior'?

Than sit still without flinching. The noise will lose out when it doesn't meet an opponent to fight.
